Zameen Aasman Ka Farq begins with a deceptively simple observation: in India, men holding hands, interlocking pinkies, or leaning intimately into one another is called "friendship." Marc Ohrem-Leclef's image-text work moves through this opening to explore the many dimensions of bonding, touch, and love among Indian men — from the openly affectionate to the unspoken, from metropolitan queer identities to fluid lives in rural spaces that require no labels at all.
For almost a decade, he has traveled with translators across 23 Indian states, recording over 250 conversations in 19 languages and making analog medium-format portraits, to produce an archive that maps a deeply human desire for connection. Yielding to his collaborators' voices, the work renders the spaces they carve out for themselves — irrespective of category or label — with candor, intimacy, and trust.
