The monograph KARTEN MAPPE (MAPS FOLDER) compiles the illustrative works of the visual artist Esther Ernst, whose work deals with the field of cartography. In 2020, Esther Ernst was a fellow at the German Academy in Rome, Casa Baldi, in Olevano Romano. During her stay there, she explored and drew her location, just as she had already done during other residencies in Cairo, Jena, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The illustrations she produced in these places are geographical and biographical in equal measure. They tell us not only of urban spaces but also of the artist’s own life, her encounters and experiences. She integrates notes, reflections and associations, which then unfold as colourful and glittering worlds.
MAPS FOLDER lets us embark as readers and observers on a journey to faraway, sometimes fantastical places, and more than anything else into the world of Esther Ernst.
