Gottfried Jäger’s archive is like a cabinet of curiosities for concrete and generative photography. It not only contains numerous preliminary studies and drafts for works that were then completed but also notebooks and sketches, posters and flyers, as well as unpublished manuscripts and countless photos from many different fields. The spectrum ranges from artistic to applied works, and from analogue photographs and photograms to images that were generated on a computer. In this way, we can follow Gottfried Jäger as he probes the potential field of photography in remarkably varied ways. Almost all of the works were conceived as series from the outset, and many follow a plan structured much like an experiment. Apparatus and technique are often at the centre of his work. For Gottfried Jäger, they are a prerequisite, a challenge and a possibility all at the same time. The book vividly demonstrates what photography is capable of in the age of technology, cybernetics and information.
The publication is being released in connection with the exhibition of the same name in the spring of 2026 at the Turm zur Katz in Constance.
