Coghuf – Maler des Jura

The 2026 exhibition in Jura, which bears the same name as the artist himself, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the death of Ernst Stocker, a painter from Basel who is better known under his pseudonym Coghuf.
A multidisciplinary artist, he felt just as at home in painting as he did in stained-glass art. And he left important traces of his work in the region he called home among collectors and in several churches. Swiss modern art of the mid-twentieth century has a lot to thank this unconventional painter for.
He turned to abstract art after previously being seen as one of the most brilliant portrait and landscape painters of his generation.
The exhibition in Jura honours Coghuf at five locations, among them three museums, the house of a collector, and the farm owned by the artist’s descendants, where his fully preserved studio can still be found. More than 200 works are being displayed at the various exhibition sites. Under the auspices of Yves Guignard, the publication contains photographs of all these paintings as well as new approaches towards viewing his work from around fifteen art historians from all over Switzerland.
