The book Artists in Residence für Alterszentren (Artists in Residence for Geriatric Centres) is a documentation of the residence programme of the same name. In it, initial trials were carried out to explore how the perspectives of artist and residents in a geriatric home can come together and mutually benefit one another in everyday life. As a pilot project, “Artists in Residence for Geriatric Centres” demonstrated impressively how much artistic processes can enrich people’s everyday life and wellbeing. This happens because taking part in cultural life opens doors in geriatric centres for everyone involved – to new subject matters, memories, things people have in common, forms of exchange, and many other activities.
The project clearly showed that art is far more than just a source of joy. It creates meaning, connection, and it strengthens people’s mental vitality. On top of that, it has the potential to change the way that society looks at aging: away from ideas dominated by the downsides, instead moving towards the notion that elderly people are also active, creative and important members of society.
