Curator Sarah E. Davis writes in her foreword: "Discussions about the Situationists led me and the artists on this project to return again and again to the poetic call to arms Beneath the pavement lies the beach. This battle cry was painted on walls all over Paris during the May 1968 riots. [...] In this series of exhibitions, the original slogan is understood as a binary relationship between culture and nature: the cobblestone street and the beach. The beach and the relationship of the individual is understood as an expanded concept that has emerged from geological, archaeological, historical, digital, and phenomenological lines of inquiry. It is understood both as a symbol of natural and temporal cycles and as a threshold of transition between surface and substrate, image and information, and virtual and physical realms.

The catalogue was published to coincide with the exhibitions of the same name at Centrum, Berlin, and Bus Projects, Melbourne.
