For several years, Christof Zwiener searched the public spaces of East Berlin for traces of the GDR. Large parts of the architectural and urban heritage have disappeared and been destroyed, yet flagpoles seem to have successfully defied the transformation process, even though they too have moved out of the visual and cultural consciousness. In his publication nach 1990 – Fokus Fahnenmast (after 1990 – Focus Flagpoles) the artist gathers more than 300 photographs and directs our gaze not only to a special legacy of the GDR, but also to the locations, architectures and situations surrounding the former GDR flagpoles.
